Description
Less than an hour's drive from the Andalusian capital lies one of the greatest ecological gems of the European continent. Doñana National Park, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve, is the most important protected area in Europe thanks to its strategic value as a refuge and stopover point for hundreds of migratory bird species. An astonishing natural setting where the marshland plain meets the sands of the Atlantic coast in spectacular fashion.
The expedition sets off early from Seville heading south, following the banks of the lower stretch of the Guadalquivir River. Our first encounter with the marshland ecosystem takes place in the Dehesa de Abajo area, in La Puebla del Río. This unique spot is home to an extraordinary grove of wild olive trees that shelters the largest white stork colony in the old continent, offering an unbeatable natural vantage point to begin birdwatching and take in a flat, cinematic landscape that has served as a film set.
Next, we will venture into the heart of the National Park aboard off-road vehicles equipped to travel over complex terrain. This 4x4 route allows us to observe the astonishing transition between the different ecosystems of Doñana: from scrubland and dense Mediterranean forest to inland lagoons and thirty kilometres of pristine beaches. Along the way, we will keep an eye on the wooded landscape in order to track footprints and spot large local mammals, with the chance to look for the park's great icon: the Iberian lynx.
The ethnographic side of the trip will take us to the emblematic village of El Rocío. Strolling through its traditional compact-sand streets, where horses replace cars, evokes the Andalusian atmosphere of centuries past. There we will visit the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora del Rocío, the famous chapel that gathers thousands of devotees every year. We will complete the experience with a walking route through the gallery forests near the Arroyo de la Rocina and the Palacio del Acebrón, and finally enjoy free time on the Matalascañas coast, ideal for lunch or a refreshing swim in the summer months before heading back to Seville.
